With the 2014 Academy Awards now behind us, we can sadly say goodbye to awards season. Goodbye to Lupita Nyong'o in something fabulous every night. Goodbye to JLaw tripping. Goobye to all the glitz of Hollywood royalty really bringing it. Last night was the perfect culmination of this season, with a red carpet literally busting with great looks. So much so, that I really don't have a Worst Dressed list, but a 'middle ground' list because everyone really looked beautiful. But let's talk the creme de la creme! Here are the ladies who really killed it last night. My picks for best dressed at the Oscars!
Portia de Rossi in Naeem Khan
As far as supportive, loving wives go on the Oscar red carpet...they usually stick to more understated looks. But in Portia's world, that is not the case. I love this gorgeous cut out gown by Naeem Khan. The fit is perfection, and the color somehow is warm with her fair skin and golden accessories. Ellen is one lucky lady to go home with Portia!
Jessica Biel in Chanel Couture
Jessica Biel came out of hiding last night, and no she did not have a baby bump, in this stunning Chanel couture gown. It took me a moment to get over her because she looks so gorgeous! The gown is a slinky, shimmering second skin, fitting Biel to a tee. Her accessories are bold, but not distracting...and her hair looks so lush, healthy and beautiful. Truly an elegant look.
Glenn Close in Zac Posen
This blew me away. When you reach a certain age in Hollywood, there seems to be a real cutoff in the level of glamour they let you make on the red carpet. Usually these older ladies are plucked into 'Mother of the Bride'-esque pieces that are meh and forgettable. To see Glenn Close rocking a beautifully fitted, mermaid gown by Zac Posen seems like a real victory. It takes into account her age, with the matching shrug to cover her arms, but doesn't sacrifice glam one bit. This is a HUGE success to me. You Go Glenn Coco Close!
Naomi Watts in Calvin Klein
It stunned me to see Naomi in white and not a metallic, shimmering gown (which she wears so beautifully). It was also a shock to see her in Calvin Klein, but it did not surprise me that she looked absolutely amazing. As always Watts really gets how to work the red carpet and this capped sleeve, white gown is very clean and refreshing with spring just around the corner. Also amazing is her makeup, her bold lip and brow are offset the dress beautifully.
Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen
It's been a touch and go season for Sandra Bullock in my opinion. She's been brave to take some big fashion risks, some paid off and some fell flat. But at last night's Academy Awards she went for a beautiful, traditional navy gown by Alexander McQueen that you can't find one fault with. The way this gown drapes over her and pools on the red carpet is so classic and glamorous. Sandy's hair, makeup and accessories all compliment it so beautifully. I look at this and think 'Now THAT is a movie star!'
Amy Adams in Gucci
Also in navy and also a nominee is Amy Adams in this stunning, custom Gucci. When you compare this Gucci to that over Anne Hathaway, you really see the degree of talent they have at designing gowns. So, you really can't go wrong with Gucci, am I right? I love the neckline of this and how minimal she went with accessories. It's effortlessly beautiful. Only thing I'm not quite sure about is her hair. It's not really doing much for me, but with a dress that beautiful...who needs hair?
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
Recently I included JLaw on my best dressed Oscar list of all time, in a red Calvin Klein tank dress. (See Here) And as that red dress was so memorable and defining for Jennifer Lawrence, it was a big surprise to see her showing up in red once again. But boy, is this hot! Of all the Dior we've seen her wear, this one takes the cake as my favorite of all. The color is beautiful and the design is, well, perfect! Sometimes going for standard beauty like this is the best choice you can make. It's not daring, it's timeless beauty. Kudos to JLaw for sticking with Dior consistently, and make the predictable enjoyable by mixing up looks from their repertoire. They really ought to give her a raise.
Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive Couture
There was much speculation over that Armani Cate would wear to the Academy Awards. Her strong relationship with the brand made them a shoo-in to dress her, but with many options, no one quite new what she'd be wearing. Cate showed up in this gorgeous gown from their Fall 2013 Couture collection, which is a bit of a surprise because that's the same collection she pulled her Golden Globes dress from. To me, this gown is the definition of couture with its extreme detail and craftsmanship. It's a beautiful work of art and Blanchett is, as always, the perfect muse to bring it to life. The way she carries a gown, is flawless. IN FACT, in general: she is flawless.
Lupita Nyong'o in Prada
Cinderella better watch out, because Lupita Nyong'o is coming in to steal her crown. In this gracious, soft Prada, Miss Nyong'o truly took my breath away. She is so radiant and flawless, you can't help but lose yourself in the beauty of it all. After stealing the hearts of many this award season, with an array beautiful colors...she is definitely the it girl of 2014. She carries such joy with her onto the red carpet and it's infectious! How can you not love this girl? How can you not love this Prada in its sweeping beauty and soft specks of sparkle. Definitely a fashion moment the Oscar red carpet will never forget.
Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace
If you told me yesterday that Kate Hudson would be my favorite of the night, I wouldn't believe you. While I admire her style and she's graced the Oscar red carpet in several great looks, I really didn't expect to be so blown away. Leave it to Atelier Versace to steal the show with this sultry, sexy gown paired with a cape. I mean, can't lie, my love of this is probably 70 percent cape, 30 percent dress...but regardless, both are so amazing it's a total win. I love how this remains extremely classy, while being extremely sexy. Kate toes the line perfectly. You go girl!
I really could continue, but I'll keep it at ten here. Huge congratulations to Lupita Nyong'o for her Oscar win! Her speech was so moving and it felt like a really historic moment with her gown and demure demeanor. It was a fabulous night. Who was your best dressed? Let me know in the comments!
